The 7 Unique Premier League Scores
The 7 Unique Premier League Scores
Records are made to be broken and there have been many instances where both clubs and players have broken records in the Premier League. Chelsea have the record number of points in a season while Arsenal hold the record of having gone a whole Premier League season without losing. Manchester City are looking likely to break Premier League records this season and it is only a matter of time before their highly attacking squad overtake some of the scores on this list. With Bournemouth and Swansea coming up for City, it might be worth a bet on the Premier League result to see City obliterating both team’s defences.
The 2-1 score line is the most common score in English football, however there have been some score lines which have bucked this trend and produced some ridiculous goal fests. Clubs like Portsmouth, West Brom and Tottenham have all been involved in some high scoring matches and we have taken a look at the 7 unique Premier League scores.
Portsmouth 7-4 Reading- 29th September 2007
The highest ever scoring game in Premier League history features two unlikely teams. Early on in the 2007/08 season Portsmouth managed to score seven goals against Reading at Fratton Park. The Pompey fans are known for being able to create a fantastic atmosphere and they helped their team to a famous victory against their rivals.
Portsmouth took a 2-1 lead into the half time break thanks to a brace from Benjani before Stephen Hunt got a goal back. The second half saw eight goals scored as Benjani completed his hat-trick on the 70 minute mark. Goals from Hermann Hreidarsson, Niko Kranjcar, Sulley Muntari and Sean Davis completed Pompey’s seven goal haul. Reading managed to save face with goals from Dave Kitson, Shane Long and a 94th minute Sol Campbell own goal to go with Hunt’s first half strike.
The Premier League has not seen such a high scoring game since, but with Manchester City’s form, it is certainly possible this season.
Tottenham 6-4 Reading- 29th December 2007
The fixture at Fratton Park wasn’t the only time Reading suffered a hammering in the 2007/08 season as three months after the record high scoring game, the Royals travelled to White Hart Lane and struggled defensively.
While Benjani managed a hat-trick at Fratton Park, Tottenham’s Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov managed to go one better, scoring four goals past Reading’s American goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.
Steed Malbranque and Jermain Defoe were the other Spurs players on the scoresheet while Reading saw Cisse and Ingimarsson score a goal each and a brace from Dave Kitson completed their scoring. Frustratingly for Reading, they led the match three times before eventually succumbing to the Lilywhites at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham 9-1 Wigan Athletic- 22nd November 2009
A little under two years after Tottenham fans got to witness a ten goal thriller, they were gifted another one when Wigan visited White Hart Lane in the 2009/10 season. While the previous ten goal thriller was a close affair, this time Spurs managed to keep a tighter defence and have a more potent attack as Tottenham’s attackers managed to score nine goals between them.
Peter Crouch opened the scoring at nine minutes, however fans in the stadium would have to wait 42 minutes (plus the break at half time) before witnessing another goal, when Jermain Defoe scored on the 51st minute. Defoe scored five of the nine second half goals making him only the third player to ever score five goals in a Premier League match. Dimitar Berbatov and Sergio Aguero have since gone on to match the feat, joining Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.
Manchester United 8-2 Arsenal- 28th August 2011
Arsenal suffered their worst defeat since 1896 when they travelled to Old Trafford early on in the 2011/12 season. The game saw four first half goals as Manchester United took a 3-1 lead into half time with Theo Walcott giving Arsenal some hope. That hope was soon dashed after half time as the Devils managed to score another three goals before Arsenal grabbed their second of the match through Robin van Persie.
Wayne Rooney ended the game with the match ball after he scored a hat-trick thanks to an 82nd minute penalty. On top of Rooney’s hat-trick Ashley Young scored a brace, while goals from Danny Welbeck, Nani and Ji-Sung Park piled the humiliation onto the Gunners.
Arsenal 7-3 Newcastle United- 29th December 2012
The previous season saw Arsenal on the receiving end of a thrashing, however the 2012/13 season saw Arsenal dish out the thrashing as they took on Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium. The full time result was unexpected, particularly as the scores were level at 1-1 when the first half came to a close.
It was Theo Walcott who stole the show, scoring a hat-trick and assisting two goals as Arsenal showed they could dish it out just as they took it. A brace from French striker Olivier Giroud and goals from Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain completed the scoring for a rampant Gunners side. Demba Ba managed to score a brace for Newcastle while Sylvain Marveaux scores the Magpies’ third goal.
West Brom 5-5 Manchester United- 19th May 2013
In what was Sir Alex Ferguson’s 1500th and final game in charge of Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion managed to deny the Scotsman a winning exit in a ten goal thriller. Romelu Lukaku, bagged a hat-trick for the Baggies, who left it late to come from 5-2 down to draw 5-5.
Four of the United goal scorers from this match have since moved on from the club, with Shinji Kagawa, Alexander Buttner, Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez all being moved on under manager Louis van Gaal. Hernandez is the only one of the four to have since returned to the Premier League after West Ham United signed the Mexican striker in the summer. The fifth United goal scorer was actually West Brom’s Jonas Olsson, who left the Baggies to return to his native Sweden. James Morrison is the only goal scorer from this match to still be at the same club, while Romelu Lukaku who played for West Brom in this fixture is now a United player.
Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town- 4th March 1995
Manchester United made history by becoming the first team to score nine goals in a Premier League match when they played Ipswich Town at Old Trafford back in the 1994/95 season. Andy Cole also made history in this match by becoming the first ever player to score five goals in a game.
Roy Keane opened the scoring for the Red Devils, while a brace from Mark Hughes and a goal from Paul Ince on top of Cole’s five goals saw the Tractor Boys hit for nine without reply.
Tottenham are the only other team to have scored nine goals in a Premier League match, while Jermain Defoe, Alan Shearer, Dimitar Berbatov and most recently Sergio Aguero have all scored five goals in a Premier League match.December 19, 2017 / [email protected] / Comments Off on The 7 Unique Premier League Scores
