Who Are the Best Australian Players to Ever Play in the Premier League?

In many footie fans’ eyes, the English Premier League gets considered the best one on the planet. That is so on account of multiple factors. And among these are its high-level competitive balance, the financial power of its clubs, its simmering atmosphere, and the talent it attracts. Its broadcast reach is extensive, and EPL markets get featured at the best Australian casino sites in their sportsbook sections.

Over the years, many Australians have made their way to England to try their luck and test their skill among EPL’s best. However, few have reached the league’s cream of the crop, so to speak. Below, we rattle off four players from Down Under who managed to stay in this premium football competition for years at varied clubs and show that Aussies have top-tier footballing talents on their continent.

    Harry Kewell

Harry Kewell is currently a first-team coach at Celtic, and in 2012, he got voted Australia’s greatest footballer by pundits and fans alike. He began his EPL career at Leeds United, where he stayed for seven years scoring forty-five goals in one hundred and one matches. At the start of the 2003/04 season, he switched to his favorite childhood team, Liverpool, for a fee of £5 million. Kewell stayed at Anfield for five seasons, shinning in his first season, and by the 2006/07 season, seeing his role in the club diminished substantially. He left England for Turkey in 2008, when he chose to join Super Lig giant Galatasaray, where he once again shined.

    Mark Viduka

Viduka is an Aussie with Croat roots, who was Kewell’s team-mate for three years at Leeds United, a club he joined from Irish powerhouse Celtic in 2000. Viduka stayed at Leeds for four seasons before transferring to Middlesbrough, where he did not manage to display the same spark, he had when managed by David O’Leary, particularly the showings put on in the club’s 2002/03 campaign when he netted twenty-two goals. That said, in his last year in the North Yorkshire team’s kit, Viduka scored fourteen goals before moving on to Newcastle United, where hit put the ball seven times in opponents’ nets in the team’s 2007/08 campaign. Viduka put the boots up in 2009 in the Newcastle shirt.

    Tim Cahill

Often called a box-to-box midfielder, Tim’s tenacity frequently got touted as his best attribute. He earned one hundred and eight caps for his national side between 2004 and 2018 and played for Everton from 2004 to 2012. During his time with the People’s Club base in Liverpool, Cahill made two hundred and twenty-six appearances in which he put the ball at the back of the net fifty-six times. Not too shabby for an attacking midfielder.

    Michael Jedinak

Nicknamed Mile, Jedinak is the former Australian national football team captain, a side he led in twenty-five games. Born and raised in Sydney, he played for the city’s Sydney United before moving to Croatia on loan, where he received virtually no playing time. After various spells at Australian and Turkish clubs, Jedinak came to Crystal Palace, where he stayed for five years and played one hundred and sixty-five games. In 2016, he moved to Aston Villa, a team whose member he remained until his retirement in 2019.
