The Race For The Bundesliga Title
Although COVID-19 has played havoc with the global sporting schedule over the past few months, there are signs that life is being brought back into the calendar with the Bundesliga set to return within the next week, football fans finally have something to look forward to. While although the much-heralded restart is just around the corner, the planning of such an occasion has not been smooth sailing and with delays to kick-off and Dynamo Dresden having to deal with positive coronavirus tests, German football is far from out of the woods.
However, as bad as the news regarding the Dynamo players are, it only has a bearing on their fixtures in the second tier and with a small period isolation now required, they will look to further rescheduling as many as three remaining fixtures when possible.
This delay in proceedings will obviously be a blow to everyone involved, but the Deutsche Football League (DFL) are adamant that the show must go on and that is exactly what will happen in the top division.
A competition that is usually dominated by Bayern Munich and although they have not quite had it all their own way, they still find themselves once again top of the standings, with a four-point margin over their nearest challengers.
For many observers, they will be the favorites to lift the Bundesliga title, and such as 5dimes (full review) has them at -416 followed by Borussia Dortmund +550.
For the Bavarian outfit, this has been a season of managerial upheaval and with Niko Kovac being shown the Allianz Arena door before the halfway stage, there was a sense of this great German dynasty potentially coming to an end.
With that said, Bayern are an outfit that can never be written off and after appointing former player Hans-Dieter Flick as an interim coach last November, the 55-year-old has undoubtedly an incredible job in such a short time.
So incredible, that the man who played for the club between 1985 and 1990 has now been given the job on a permanent basis and even though there may be more household names available, no one can argue that Flick has been almost a perfect fit for the role.
When the now permanent boss took the reins six months ago, there was a feeling of almost apathy within the Bayern camp and it looked as if the end of the road had been reached for a number of their star names.
Thankfully for those star names, the appointment of Flick has been a revelation and the most obvious recipient of such rejuvenated powers has been none other than their Polish hitman Robert Lewandowski.
Before the enforced period of hibernation, the fearsome forward has scored no fewer than 25 league goals and that haul puts him top of the domestic Golden Boot standings – four clear of nearest rival Timo Werner.
Werner’s goals have been a thorn in Lewandowski’s side on two fronts, as the German international has played a huge part in RB Leipzig being considered genuine title contenders and with just a five-point margin between the two clubs, they cannot be ruled out of any championship conversation.
With that said, one must not forget the team that is sandwiched in between both Bayern and RB Leipzig at present, and with just four points between themselves and the table toppers, Borussia Dortmund will be confident of going all the way.
Lucien Favre’s young guns have been an absolute joy to watch this season and with the likes of Jadon Sancho and Erling BrautHaaland terrorizing opposition defenses, they will be poised to cause more damage in the final quarter of the season.
While when it comes to the latter, Haaland has been nothing short of sensational since his arrival from Red Bull Salzburg in January and had he had a full season under his belt, the yellow and black of Dortmund might be clear at the top by now.
With that said, it’s not what you do up until this point, it is how you end a 34-week season and with nine matches still left to play, you get the feeling that this title race, is one that will go down right to the wire and any observers of the Bundesliga, are going to be in for a real treat.
